So me and my boyfriend recently went to the stunning European city of Hamburg in Germany.
Known as Germany’s second biggest city, this vibrant city with its stunning architecture, and home to Germany’s largest harbour, Hamburg is the perfect short break destination.
When asking around, we didn’t really know anyone that had visited Hamburg. This made us both nervous..yet more intrigued to go. I did some research into Hamburg attractions but when we arrived and walked around, we ended up discovering even more of the city’s jems.
I’ve come up with some suggestions of where you should visit in Hamburg:
Stay at NH Collection Hamburg City Hotel
Looking for a relaxed, friendly, clean and accessible hotel? Then this stylish, open spaced 4 star hotel is perfect for you. The hotel is located 5 minute walk from Messehallen metro station, and is only an additionally 10 minutes into the city centre on U2 metro.
Buy Hamburg Card
Choose how many days you want to use the card for and have unlimited daily access to all metro, train and bus routes as well as harbour ferries and enjoy up to 50% discount on tourist attractions, museums, musical shows, bars, cafes and restaurants.
I recommend buying the card online before you get to Hamburg or when you arrive at the airport, so you can begin using it straight away. The S1 metro are very regular, every 10 minutes and it only takes journey time of 25 minutes into Hamburg City Centre, so this will help you to save money on taxi fare.
Have a walk around Alster Lakes
They’re two lakes in Hamburg – the outer and Inner Alster, which are separated by Kennedy and Lombard bridges. The lakes are the perfect place to soak in the city’s vibrant culture and beautiful environment.
I totally recommend going by the lakes at sunset. We sat there for over an hour admiring the gorgeous views. It may get very busy especially on warm evenings, but the atmosphere is still so peaceful.
Go on a night out at the Reeperbahn.
Also known as Hamburg’s red light district, Reeperbahn has wide selection of independent and fast food restaurants, bars, clubs, supermarkets and shops for adults only. Only a 13 minute metro ride on S1 from Hamburg’s main train station, the Reeperbahn is a great place to enjoy an evening out with your partner or friends.
For any of you theatre lovers, Stage Operettenhaus are presenting Olivier Award winning hit musical Kinky Boots. Tickets are available on the theatre’s website.
Visit the Hard Rock Cafe
Situated on the harbour of the Elbe River is Hamburg’s Hard Rock Cafe and shop. A great place to enjoy quality food and beverages, especially on the rooftop terrace and listen to your favourite music. Look out for fantastic music memorabilia throughout the restuarant, from some of the worlds legendary music artists including a stripey jacket worn by the David Bowie.
You can also enjoy 10% of Hard Rock Shop with your Hamburg Card.
Have a drink at Zwick St Pauli
For all you rock ‘n’ roll fans, this is a must see on your trip in Hamburg. Established in 1950, this rock bar has seen a wide range of people entering its doors including rock legends Bon Jovi, Jimi Hendrix and Freddy Mercury.
Zwick offers wide selection of alcoholic beverages and cuisine, and even has menus printed in different languages, so its accessible for all and you can expect great, friendly service from all staff.
Go inside the grounds of Hamburg’s City Hall
Also known as Rathaus, this stunning late 19th century hall is where Hamburg Parliament and the Senate come together. Its stunning architecture consisting of 647 rooms will have you instantly amazed. Walk inside the grounds of the hall for free or join a guided tour for small price of €4 or €3 with your Hamburg Card.
Spend the day at Hagenbeck Tierpark
Home to some of the worlds beautiful creations, this zoo and aquarium allows you the opportunity to see your favourite animals in open-air enclosures. Get up close and be able to feed them, by buying food from the park’s gift shop. Home to elephants, zebras, polar bears, lemurs and so much more, it is a fantastic day out for all.
Plus you can enjoy 10% of your ticket with your Hamburg Card.
is a beautiful city that I definitely recommend you should visit. Have you ever been to Hamburg? What were your favourite places to visit?
